In this final episode of the Ransomed deep dive on Politics of Justice, we close out Chapters 35–41, where the case against Judge Eamon Brody reaches a jury, and every character has to reckon with what a federal prosecution can and cannot deliver.

The story widens beyond one judge. When evidence surfaces outside the courtroom, we see how long a family can hold a line — a county prosecutor who declined to charge, a hand-picked successor who declined again, a transfer from probate to juvenile that relocated the problem instead of solving it, and a state attorney general who passed on the case twice. We discuss what happens when the people charged with oversight are the same people being protected, and why a special prosecutor is so often the last available remedy rather than the first.

Casey finally makes her choice. Her engagement to Tom was never only about love. It was about legitimacy, class, and a seat at a table she’d been locked out of since childhood. Walking away costs her the dream she’d built her whole adult life around, and she negotiates the terms of her own exit like the lawyer she is. Claire, meanwhile, faces a different reckoning: what she owed the women who tried to warn her, and what she’s willing to risk for her son.

In this episode of Politics of Justice, I discuss Chapters 5 through 8 of Ransomed, the second book in the Casey Cort legal thriller series.

These chapters deepen the conflict and begin to reveal the imbalance of power at the center of the story. What initially appears procedural starts to feel personal, and the consequences of authority—especially unchecked authority—become harder to ignore.

Like many of the novels in this series, Ransomed was shaped in part by real events, including the federal case United States v. David W. Lanier, which exposed how a Tennessee judge used the authority of his position to abuse women who appeared before him.

Like many of the stories in this series, Ransomed was influenced by real events. The novel draws inspiration from United States v. David W. Lanier, a federal case involving a Tennessee judge who used the power of his position to abuse women who appeared before him.

Chapters 3 and 4 continue to introduce the world Casey Cort is stepping into—one where the authority of the courtroom can hide misconduct, and where victims often face the impossible choice between silence and retaliation.

These chapters trace Sheila Harrison Grant’s internal calculations as she manages appearances, alliances, and expectations within a tightly knit political ecosystem—one where nothing looks overtly corrupt, but very little is accidental.

We see how Sheila understands the system not as an abstract ideal, but as a set of levers: relationships to maintain, favors to remember, risks to anticipate. Her authority rests as much on perception and restraint as on formal rules, and the narrative lingers in her private justifications rather than her public actions.

In counterpoint, Casey Cort continues to operate on the margins of that same system, increasingly aware of how local politics shapes outcomes long before cases reach any formal decision point. The contrast isn’t between right and wrong, but between visibility and insulation—between those who absorb consequences and those who never have to explain themselves.

During the show, we talk about a lot of industry stuff. There are two people who I feel I should mention. First, Evelyn mentioned Writing For Your Id. Several years ago author and professor Jennifer Lynn Barnes gave this talk at a Romance Writers of America conference. It’s one of the best talks in the history of the conference. Also, both Evelyn in this episode and Nancy Warren in a previous episode have mentioned a talk Theodora Taylor gave in November of 2020. It was about universal fantasies and it was given at the (virtual) 2020 Romance Author Mastermind conference. It was hands down one of the best presentations about storytelling and relating to an audience.
